Cookie Q&A
Questions and answers about cookies on my website.
Q: Why the constant question about cookies?
A: According to EU Directive 2009/136/EC, the user's consent must be obtained before cookies are placed. Since I neither have the time to read the 26-page guideline completely nor the legal background to understand it, I would like to be on the safe side and point this out to you accordingly. Since my web server cannot remember that you do not want cookies if you reject them (because I would have to set a cookie for this), this form pops up every time you visit a page with cookies.
Q: What data do the cookies contain?
A: Cookies on my site simply store the data you have entered in the associated form. This serves the sole purpose of ensuring that you do not have to enter it again when you visit my site again. That is the original purpose of cookies, convenience. In particular, no additional data is stored that could make you identifiable.
My cookies are unencrypted (plain text) and, depending on your browser, you can read them directly and check the data if you want.
Q: Can you track me?
A: I do not set a tracking cookie. Still, your inputs are probably the same in my calculation tools, so if I wanted to, probably yes. However, my cookies expire after a while and your anonymity is restored.
Note: Even if you reject cookies, you would probably enter the same data here again and I could recognize you - if I only wanted to...
Q: Are you tracking me?
A: No.
Q: Can I be sure?
A: Yes. You can prevent the acceptance of cookies in your browser. How exactly to do this is stated in the instructions and varies from browser to browser. Then I don't have a chance anymore. I don't use Flash cookies or other nasty things.
However, when you access my tools again, you will have to re-enter all the data because you did not allow your browser to remember it.
Q :What would you gain from tracking me?
A: Nothing. One of the reasons why I don't do that either. This is not a commercial site. I make no profit from your visit to this site or from passing on any personal data and I don't know what I could gain from knowing that you were here six months ago.
